India has reported its first confirmed case of the highly contagious mpox clade 1b strain, which was recently declared a public health emergency by the World Health Organization (WHO). The case was detected in Kerala’s Malappuram district in a 38-year-old man who returned from Dubai.
The WHO has raised alarm globally, as the clade 1b variant is known for its rapid transmission, first originating in Africa. The Kerala patient’s close contacts, including 29 family members and 37 passengers from his flight, are currently being monitored for symptoms, although none have shown signs of the infection yet.
Health authorities in India have been on high alert since the WHO’s declaration in August, with the central government advising states to ramp up testing and surveillance efforts. Over 35 laboratories across India have been designated for testing potential mpox cases, reflecting the urgency of containing the virus.
Since 2022, India has recorded over 30 cases of mpox, but these were caused by the less infectious clade 2 strain. This latest case of clade 1b, however, signals a more serious public health threat due to its increased virulence.
The federal government and medical experts are now stressing the importance of vigilance, contact tracing, and early detection. Authorities have also underlined that, while mpox can cause severe illness, it is rarely fatal. Symptoms include fever, swollen lymph nodes, muscle aches, and painful skin lesions. Complications such as pneumonia and encephalitis can arise, especially in immunocompromised individuals, making it critical for healthcare systems to respond swiftly.
As of now, health officials in Kerala remain optimistic that they will control the spread, but they urge the public to stay informed about the symptoms and seek medical attention early.
