Overview
Self-defense is present in everyone and is generally harmless. However, autoimmunity can lead to a wide range of human diseases, collectively known as autoimmune diseases. Autoimmune diseases occur when benign autoimmunity increases pathogenic autoimmunity. This development is determined by genetic effects as well as by environmental stimuli.
Autoimmunity is evidenced by the presence of autoantibodies (antibodies directed against these individuals) and the presence of T cells that interact with the host antigen.
