This is a special type of medium that is used to grow microorganisms that are damaged and have lost the ability to produce due to certain harmful environmental factors.
Selective media are designed to inhibit unwanted commensal or contaminating bacteria and help to recover pathogen from a mixture of bacteria.
Enrichment media are liquid media that also serves to inhibit commensals in the clinical specimen. Selenite F broth, tetrathionate broth and alkaline peptone water are used to recover pathogens from fecal specimens.
It contains all the basic nutrients required for microbial growth and is used to preserve a particular type of microorganism, preferably bacteria or for a long time a set of different microbial entities.
